Trash¶
This page describes the Trash for Items and the Trash page. An Analysis moves to the Trash as described in Moving an Analysis to the Trash.
Search no longer finds an Item in the Trash. The Item keeps working wherever it is displayed or used.
What goes to the Trash¶
Open the Item's properties by clicking ⓘ on its row in the Details Pane. Click Move to the Trash. Before you move it, review its Item Usages in the same dialog. See Item properties.
- You need Write access to the Analysis to move one of its Calculated Items to the Trash.
- A Stored Signal is shared across all Analyses. Only an Administrator can move it to the Trash, and this changes it for every user.
Indexing moves a Stored Signal to the Trash if it is missing from its Datasource. A later Indexing restores it if it reappears. A Stored Signal that an Administrator moved to the Trash stays there when it reappears. If an Administrator restores a Stored Signal that is still missing from its Datasource, the next Indexing moves it back to the Trash.
Trashing a Folder¶
A user with Manage can move a Folder to the Trash from its row in the Analyses list. The confirmation names the Folder and says how many Analyses and Folders are inside it, including at any depth.
Only the Folder is marked as trashed. Everything inside it becomes inaccessible to everyone, including its Owner, and disappears from every list, including Shared. The contents are not trashed themselves, so their names and Grants stay reserved and they come back when the Folder is restored.
What the Trash changes¶
- Search no longer finds it. It isn't offered in the Data tab or when you choose an Item for a
$variable, other than from the Details Pane. - It keeps working. A trashed Item still resolves in Details Panes, Capsule Time and Formulas. plintz still reads its Samples and Capsules, and the Calculated Items that use it still compute. Moving an Item to the Trash does not break Analyses that already use it.
- plintz flags the Item in red with "In the Trash". It marks the ⓘ button and the Item's name in the Details Pane, the Item Usages of other Items, the Item Properties dialog title, and the Formula editor. The editor marks both the Item being edited and any Item bound to a
$variable.
Restoring an Item¶
Open the Item's ⓘ in the Details Pane and click Restore from the Trash. It can be found by search again. The same people who can move it to the Trash can restore it.
A trashed Calculated Item can also be restored from the Trash page, as described below. A trashed Stored Signal can be restored by an Administrator, from a Details Pane that still has it or from the Trash tab of the Administration page.
A Folder can be restored from the Trash page or the Administration page's Trash tab. Restoring it brings back everything inside it that was not itself moved to the Trash, and updates the Folder's Last Updated. A restore of an Analysis or Folder that was trashed on its own also restores any trashed Folders above it. You need Manage on the item and on each trashed Folder above it; those Permissions come from the suspended Grants. If you lack Manage on any of them, nothing is restored and the error names the Folders you cannot restore. Administrators always have Manage.
Several rows of the Analyses list can be moved to the Trash at once; see Moving or trashing several rows at once.
The Trash page¶
Click Trash in the header, which every user sees, to open the Trash page. It lists what you can restore:
- Folders and Analyses you have Manage on, as Owner, Manage Grantee or Administrator, in one table by name. Each Folder row shows how many Analyses and Folders are inside.
- Calculated Items trashed in Analyses you have Write on, with the Analysis of each. Administrators have Write on every Analysis.
An Analysis or Folder moved to the Trash on its own is listed right under the row of its nearest trashed Folder, indented, if it has one. A Folder has one row, which appears only once.
Each row shows the name, who moved it to the Trash and when. For something moved to the Trash before plintz recorded them, both show Unknown. Click Restore on a row. The row goes, and an Analysis returns to the Analyses lists. A Calculated Item of an Analysis that is itself in the Trash isn't listed until the Analysis is restored.
Restoring several rows at once¶
Each row has a checkbox, and the checkbox in the header of each list selects all its rows. A bar above the lists shows how many rows are selected and offers Restore selected. It restores each row as its own Restore does, with the same rules: you need Manage on an Analysis or Folder and on each trashed Folder above it, and Write on the Analysis of a Calculated Item. Select a trashed Folder and an Analysis or Folder inside it to restore both.
The restore is all or nothing. plintz checks every selected row first, and only if every one passes does it restore any. If any fails, nothing is restored and the message names each failure and why, such as Nothing was changed. 1 failed: Analysis "Report" (Manage is required on these Folders to restore: "Site").
Administrators also see everything in the Trash, Stored Signals included, on the Trash tab of the Administration page. It lists trashed Folders with their counts, and an Analysis or Folder trashed on its own right under the row of its nearest trashed Folder, indented, if it has one. Only Administrators delete from the Trash for good, from that tab (see Deleting permanently); nothing is deleted automatically, so what is in the Trash stays until then.
