Folders, My Folder and Shared¶
A Folder is a named container of Analyses and other Folders. Folders nest to any depth, so you can organize Analyses by site, unit or project. Every Folder has an Owner, the user who created it, and is at the top level or in one other Folder. An Analysis is at the top level or in one Folder.
The Analyses screen¶
The Analyses screen, which opens when you sign in, is a Folder browser. Two links at the top choose what it lists:
- My Folder is your own top level: the Folders and Analyses you created and haven't put in another Folder. It is where the screen opens, and where an Analysis you created before Folders existed is.
- Shared is a flat list of every Folder or Analysis you can read that is not in a Folder you can read, or that is at another user's top level. An Analysis shared with you, or with Everyone, is there, with its Owner's name. A Folder you can read is not listed in Shared if you can read the Folder it is in, because you find it there.
Click a Folder's name to open it. Inside a Folder, breadcrumbs below the links show where you are: My Folder or Shared, the Folders above, and the open Folder. Click one to go back to it. The breadcrumbs show only the Folders above that you can open.
A listing shows only what you can read, with the Folders first, by name regardless of capitalization, and then the Analyses, with the most recently updated first. Each row has an icon for its type, a folder or a page with a trend line for an Analysis, then its Name, Owner and when it was Last Updated.
Creating Folders and Analyses¶
In My Folder, and in a Folder you have Write on, New Folder and New Analysis create there. A new Analysis is created in the Folder you are looking at. Shared has no Folder to create in, so it has neither button.
A new Folder is named New Folder, or the next free number, such as New Folder 2. To rename a Folder, click Rename at the end of its row. The name becomes a field: type a name and press Enter, or click elsewhere, to save it, or press Escape to keep the name it has. Renaming needs Write on the Folder, which its Owner always has.
A Folder's name:
- has spaces at its start and end removed, and 1 to 1024 characters left. If it is blank or too long, plintz reports the error and keeps the current name.
- is unique among the Folders in the same Folder, whatever its capitalization. Top-level Folders are unique among your own. If a name is taken, plintz says only "That name is unavailable." It doesn't say whose Folder it is. Changing only the capitalization of a Folder's own name is allowed.
- may be the same as an Analysis's name: Analysis names stay unique across plintz, apart from Folder names.
A Folder's Last Updated changes when it is renamed, moved, trashed, restored, when its Grants or inheritance change, or when its Owner is transferred. It doesn't change when what is in it changes.
Moving an Analysis or Folder¶
In an Analysis or Folder row, click Move to… to open the destination tree. Choose My Folder for the top level, or a Folder you have Write on. An Administrator's Manage on every Folder doesn't list them all, only those they have Write on by ownership or a Grant. Folders in the Trash aren't destinations. When moving a Folder, the tree leaves out that Folder and everything in it.
Moving needs Manage on the Analysis or Folder and Write on the destination Folder; moving to My Folder needs no Write. A Folder cannot be moved into itself or one of its descendants. A moved Analysis or Folder keeps its Owner and explicit Grants, takes the new parent's Inherited Grants, and has a new Last Updated time. After the move, the listing shows only what you can still read.
Moving or trashing several rows at once¶
Each row of the Analyses list has a checkbox. The checkbox in the header selects all the rows of the Folder you are looking at, or clears them when all are selected. A bar above the list shows how many rows are selected and offers Move to… and Move to Trash. The selection clears when you open another Folder, My Folder or Shared.
- Move to… opens the same dialog as moving one row, with a tree of My Folder and the Folders you have Write on. The tree leaves out every selected Folder and everything in it, so a Folder can't be moved into itself.
- Move to Trash asks you to confirm how many are selected, as in
Move 2 Analyses and 1 Folders, and everything in the Folders, to the Trash?. A Folder is trashed with everything in it, as in Trashing a Folder.
Both need Manage on every selected row. If you lack it on any, the bar disables both actions and its tooltip names the rows. Move to… also needs Write on the destination, as for one row.
Each operation is all or nothing. plintz checks every selected row first, and only if every one passes does it change any of them. If any fails, plintz changes nothing and the message lists each failure, naming the row and saying why, such as Nothing was changed. 1 failed: Folder "Unit" (a Folder can't be moved into itself or a descendant). A row you can't see is named by its id. A taken Folder name in the destination fails the move the same way, also when two selected Folders have the same name.
Sharing a Folder¶
The Owner and users with Manage can share a Folder from its Share action in the Analyses list. Give Read, Write or Manage to a user, a Group or Everyone. A user's Permission is determined by their highest Grant across their user account, Groups and Everyone.
A Folder inherits its parent Folder's effective Grants, including that Folder's Owner as a Manage Grantee. An Analysis or Folder inherits the effective Grants of the Folder it is in by default. Inherit permissions from parent is on by default; a user with Manage can untick it to stop that one item inheriting. Its explicit Grants still apply. An explicit Grant replaces the Inherited Grant to that same Grantee only, and can lower or raise the Permission; it then carries down to descendants. There is no "no access" Grant: untick inheritance to hide an item from inherited Grantees.
In the Share dialog, an Inherited Grant is greyed and labelled Inherited from
A Folder can be opened with Read. Write also creates Folders and Analyses in it and renames it. Manage also changes its Grants and inheritance. See Sharing and permissions for the Share dialog and the details of how an explicit Grant overrides an Inherited Grant.
