Sharing and permissions

A top-level Analysis is private to its Owner. An Analysis in a Folder inherits that Folder's effective Grants by default. The Owner or a user with Manage can also give Grants, each of which gives a user, a Group or Everyone the Permission Read, Write or Manage on the Analysis.

Sharing an Analysis

The Owner and users with Manage can share an Analysis. The Share button beside the Worksheet's title is shown to them alone. Administrators have Manage on every Analysis they open, so they see it too.

  1. Click Share. The dialog lists the Owner and the Analysis's Grants, with Everyone's first, then the Groups' and then the users', each by name. A Group's Grant is labeled Group.
  2. Choose a Permission in the Permission to grant list, Read, Write or Manage. It starts as Read. Anyone who can share can give Manage, to a user, a Group or Everyone.
  3. Type a name or an email address in Search users, Groups or Everyone. Users are found by name or email address and Groups by name. Type part of Everyone to find Everyone. Click the user, the Group or Everyone in the results to give the Grant.

To change a Grant, pick another Permission in its list. To revoke it, click × beside it. You can change or revoke any Grant, your own included, and plintz doesn't ask you to confirm. The Owner's access can't be changed or revoked: the Owner is listed first and no Grant applies to them. Only an Administrator changes the Owner, by transferring the Analysis (see Administration); the previous Owner then has only the access they are granted. plintz saves each change immediately. There is no save button, and you do not need to reopen the Analysis. Close the dialog with × or Escape.

  • Search finds a user by name or email address only after they have signed in to plintz. It does not find a user an Administrator disabled. Their existing Grants remain. See Administration.
  • A user or Group that already has a Grant, and the Owner, don't appear in the results. The results show a Group with the label Group.
  • A Grantee finds the Analysis in Shared on their Analyses screen, with you as its Owner, or in a Folder they can open that has it.

A Grant given to a Group is every member's, whether they are in the Group directly or through the Groups in it, however deep. Add a user to the Group, or take them out, and they have the Grant or lose it with no change to the Analysis. A Group's Grant is changed and revoked like any other. If an Administrator deletes the Group, the Grants given to it are removed. To give every user a Grant at once, grant Everyone.

Sharing a Folder

The Owner and users with Manage can share a Folder from its Share action in the Analyses list. Administrators have Manage on every Folder they open or address. A Grant on a Folder applies to its Analyses and nested Folders, so a Group can be given access to a whole project at once. The Owner of a Folder also has inherited Manage on everything inside it.

Inherit permissions from parent is on by default for each Analysis and Folder. A user with Manage can turn it off to stop that item receiving the parent Folder's Grants. The item's explicit Grants still apply, and a Folder's own Owner still has access. Turning inheritance off is how to hide an item from a Grantee; there is no "no access" Grant.

An explicit Grant replaces the Inherited Grant to the same Grantee only. It can raise or lower that Grantee's Permission, and that replacement is inherited by the item's descendants. A user's Permission is still the highest across all their Grantees, including their user Grant, Groups and Everyone. For example, lowering a user's explicit Permission does not lower a higher Permission they receive through a Group.

In the Share dialog, an Inherited Grant is greyed and labelled Inherited from , naming the Folder the Grant is given on, which may be above the parent. It has no ×; choose a different Permission to add an explicit Grant for that same Grantee. Revoking the explicit Grant makes the inherited one appear again. A Folder's Owner appears as Owner of in its descendants' Share dialogs.

A Group's Grants on Analyses and Folders are changed and revoked like any other. If an Administrator deletes a Group, its confirmation counts the Grants it removes on Analyses and on Folders separately. To give every user a Grant at once, grant Everyone.

Permissions

A Grant gives one of three Permissions:

Read Write Manage
Open the Analysis and its Worksheets yes yes yes
Change the Display Range, the Investigate Range, Auto Update and the Details Pane yes, but plintz doesn't save the changes yes, saved yes, saved
Search for Items and use the Formula editor no yes yes
Rename the Analysis no yes yes
Add, rename, reorder and delete Worksheets no yes yes
Edit a Calculated Item's Formula, and move it to the Trash and restore it no yes yes
See Item properties and Item Usages yes yes yes
Share the Analysis, and change or revoke its Grants no no yes
Move the Analysis or a Folder to another Folder or the top level no no yes
Move the Analysis to the Trash, and restore it no no yes

Write includes Read, and Manage includes Write. A user with Manage works on the Analysis like its Owner. No Grant can take away the Owner's access.

Administrators have Manage on every Analysis they open or address. This doesn't add the Analysis to their Analyses screen, whose My Folder and Shared list the Analyses they own or that are shared with them.

A move also needs Write on its destination Folder; moving to My Folder needs no Write. A Folder cannot be moved into itself or one of its descendants. The Analysis or Folder keeps its Owner and explicit Grants, takes the destination's Inherited Grants and has a new Last Updated time. A user with several Grants on one Analysis, such as one of their own, those of the Groups they are in and Everyone's, has the highest Permission. A Grant to a Group never lowers a user's own.

With Read access, the tool panel is hidden and you see the Worksheets as the Owner saved them. You can pan and zoom, change the ranges, turn on Auto Update, change Lanes and Y-Axes, use One Lane, One Y-Axis or Spread, or remove Items from the Details Pane. plintz does not save these changes. The Worksheet says "You have Read access, so changes aren't saved." When you open it again, it shows the saved version.

A Grant applies to an Analysis, not to its Items. A Stored Signal's properties and Trash status are the same in every Analysis. See Item properties and Trash.

When the Owner or a user with Manage moves an Analysis to the Trash, it disappears from your Analyses screen and you can't open it. plintz keeps your Grant but suspends it. If the Owner or a user with Manage restores the Analysis, your Grant works again. See Moving an Analysis to the Trash.

If you open an Analysis you have no Grant on, plintz says "Analysis not found", as it does for one that doesn't exist, or that is in the Trash.
